Using Technology in Disaster Relief: A New Era of Humanitarian Aid

Emergency management is becoming a key concern for officials as natural disasters increase day by day. Due to factors like global warming and other environmental issues, disaster management and calling for help has become a prime area of development.  Through statistical analysis and matching data, emergency management should be notified immediately of any disaster so they can send aid to the victims. Appropriate steps should be taken, especially now that technology has advanced so much. 

The different stages of disaster management include response, recovery, preparedness and reducing maximization of risk. Technology has greatly impacted all these concerned steps depending on the magnitude of the situation. Besides playing an imperative role in exchanging information, recording messages and processing requests, this new era of tech has also presented a comprehensive strategy to enhance the overall system performance of volunteers and policymakers.

The spreading of information was the basis of social media when it first came into mainstream culture. The crucial nature of authentic information being spread is what makes using social media an unreliable storytelling platform. Where people’s lives are at risk, incorrect sources may hinder disaster management and in turn, negatively affect someone’s request for help in a crisis. Despite this, social media has been integral in raising awareness for disaster relief situations from all over the world.

Examples of the effective use of social media can be seen during the 2012 Hurricane Sandy. With the circulation of 800,000 pictures online as well as the hashtag about the disaster being used, the geographical location was shown to officials who could send help. Furthermore, in 2015 Nepal was hit with earthquakes at a large magnitude and the use of social media led to the formation of various online communities that came together to give their support to those affected. The American Red Cross was hence notified and Nepal was visited by numerous relief operations.

Efficient Responses and Aid

Even though social media has become the forefront of spreading important news and the way relief organizations come to know of dire situational needs, it is not the only way technology aids disaster relief. Emergency management also needs to implement other advancements for better efficiency. By using strategies such as digital solutions to different sectors, technology can be used to bring proper and meaningful change.

Non-profit communities can take advantage of this wide sourcing means of efficient response which can help large numbers of people in remote areas of the world. Besides the aid required to keep a disaster stable and risk-free, new advancements can spread more awareness and give practical solutions, which serve as a critical resource for bettering victims’ lives.  Ranging from aerial robotics to data analysis and collection, the opportunity to impact efforts for relief comes with greater productivity as it is cost-effective, responsive and saves more lives as a whole.

No Barriers to Connectivity

There is a drastic need for constant connectivity in this field of work. When disaster strikes, communication is the most important resource available to both the volunteers and the victims. It is the base of addressing the critical needs of the situation that enables organizations to deliver what is required. Each year there are drone responders that go forward to survey areas and monitor the people. Even social media is monitored to comprehend where the damage is worse and how to prevent the most deaths. The effectiveness of this has prompted experts to develop further advancements to respond to such catastrophes.

On the Ground Action

There are quite a lot of macro-level systems that help situations of disaster relief which make management easier but there also needs to be more hands-on work. This was noted in 2017 when Hurricane Maria swept across Puerto Rico and there was no clean drinking water. Water sources needed to be assessed for survivors to be safe from harmful illnesses and diseases. More people were needed on the ground to find and allocate proper drinking sources and they could do this through technological detection. A spectrometry kit is mostly used that uses recyclable material to analyze and check any water sample for contamination.
